Wushu Kungfu Alberta is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of athletes from our member clubs who have represented Alberta and Canada at major national and international competitions throughout 2026.
From World Championships and national team selections to university competition, kickboxing, professional boxing and upcoming Pan American and Youth Olympic appearances, Alberta athletes continue to demonstrate the growing strength and depth of our martial arts community.
One TaiChi Wushu
Athletes from One TaiChi Wushu have represented Canada at two of the year’s premier international wushu events.
Murray Cheung competed at the 5th World Taijiquan Championships, earning a silver medal in Men’s New Standardized Routines – Yang Style Taijiquan. Murray also recorded two additional Top-5 results, finishing 5th in Men’s 42-Movement Taijiquan and 5th in Men’s 42-Movement Taijijian.
At the 17th World Wushu Championships, 14-year-old Cathy Chu competed as the youngest athlete in the Women’s Changquan, Jianshu and Qiangshu events. Facing many of the world’s top senior athletes, Cathy finished an impressive 13th in Jianshu, 16th in Qiangshu and 18th in her Changquan preliminary group.

Her performances represent an exciting glimpse at the next generation of Alberta athletes already competing on wushu’s biggest international stages.
Ji Hong Wushu & Tai Chi College
Athletes from Ji Hong Wushu & Tai Chi College have enjoyed an exceptional 2026 across multiple World Championship events.
At the 5th World Taijiquan Championships in Burgas, Bulgaria, Brandon Luo and Yan Khoo each captured silver medals in the elite Championship division, while Natalie Hai, Alex Fang and Julianna Huang each earned Top-10 finishes in their respective events. Ji Hong athletes added another 14 podium finishes in the Demonstration categories, with medals earned by Charlene Wong, Siaw Kin Lee, Isaac Ha, Alexa Thang and Jaylin Yim. Master Jennifer Daijuan Gu also represented Canada as Head Judge at the Championships.
At the 2026 FISU World University Championship Combat Sports in Brasília, Brazil, Brandon Luo and Julianna Huang combined for an outstanding three gold medals and one silver medal for Canada. Julianna captured gold in both Women’s Taijijian and Taijiquan, while Brandon won gold in Men’s Taijijian and silver in Men’s Taijiquan. Their performances helped Canada finish fourth in the overall Wushu medal standings.

Alberta’s next generation was also well represented at the 10th World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin, China. Max Dong captured a bronze medal in Nandao, along with 4th place in Nangun and 5th in Nanquan. Matea Cheng placed 5th in Nangun, 6th in Nandao and 8th in Nanquan. Brandon Luo served as an officially appointed Team Canada coach, while Master Jennifer Daijuan Gu was appointed Head Judge. Canada ultimately finished an historic 5th overall with seven gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

Calgary Tai Chi & Martial Arts College
Calgary Tai Chi & Martial Arts College will have a strong contingent representing Canada at the upcoming Pan American Championships in Argentina, following impressive performances at the 2026 National Selections in Waterloo, Ontario.
Artur Ismagilov earned gold medals in Changquan and Daoshu and silver in Gunshu. Antai Cui captured gold in Qiangshu and Jianshu along with silver in Changquan. Lucas Tao earned three silver medals across Nanquan, Nandao and Nangun.
Zoe Chen captured gold in Ditangquan and bronze in Qiangshu, while Hannah Dong earned silver in Double Broadsword. Iagen Leiper placed 4th in Daoshu, and Amy Zhao earned two gold medals in Daoshu along with silver in Gunshu.
Together, these athletes will carry Alberta’s colours onto the Pan American stage as part of Canada’s international contingent.
Calgary Tai Chi & Martial Arts College will also be represented at one of the world’s most prestigious youth sporting events. Miranda Wei is preparing to compete at the upcoming 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.

Miranda enters the Youth Olympics following an exceptional performance at the 2026 World Taijiquan Championships, where she captured two gold medals in Taijiquan and Taijijian, along with a bronze medal in Taijishan.
Her qualification for the Youth Olympic Games represents another significant milestone for Alberta wushu and an exciting opportunity to see one of our province’s young athletes compete on a truly global stage.
Mo Fan Taichi Wushu Academy
It was also a busy summer for Mo Fan Taichi Wushu Academy, whose athletes competed successfully in both Canada and Japan.
At the Canada International Wushu Championships in Vancouver on July 25, Mo Fan sent an impressive team of 48 athletes, who returned home with a combined 79 medals.

Several athletes also earned overall championship honours in their respective categories:
- Susanna Ng — Overall Grand Champion
- Franco Li — Overall Runner-Up
- Miles Lee — Taolu Champion
- Ryder Mo — Taolu Second Place
- Rocco Choi — Taolu Third Place
- Alice Xiao — Traditional Forms Champion
- Sylvia Shi — Traditional Forms Second Place
- Yvonne Feng — Traditional Forms Third Place
The school then travelled internationally for the International Wushu Exchange Tournament in Yonago, Tottori, Japan, on August 11.
Mo Fan sent 18 athletes, who earned six gold medals, five silver medals and three bronze medals in individual events, along with a second-place finish in the group event.
The results capped off a strong summer of competition for the academy and provided its athletes with valuable experience both at home and internationally.
Jing Ying Martial Arts
Athletes from Jing Ying Martial Arts have also achieved success across a diverse range of national and international combat sport competitions.

Olivia Luong earned a silver medal at the WKC Nationals in Ottawa and has qualified to represent Team Canada at the WKC World Championships in Cádiz, Spain, in October 2026.

Rani Jamal captured two gold medals in K1 and Muay Thai at the WKA Nationals in Calgary, earning the opportunity to represent Team Canada at the WKA World Championships in Maryland in October 2026.

Rani also stepped into the professional boxing ring internationally this year, competing in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he earned a victory by decision.
A Strong Year for Alberta Martial Arts
